About this Website

Linugen has taken great care to offer you a user friendly website with clear navigation and small loading times. In order to achieve this we embedded several great Open Source applications. Our website is a showcase for what Open Source software can do for your company. Here is an overview of how we did it:

HTML 4.0 Transitional

HyperText Markup Language is the standard publishing language of the world wide web. The 4.0 Transitional specification supports more multimedia options, scripting languages, style sheets, better printing facilities, and documents that are more accessible to users with disabilities. HTML 4.0 also takes great strides towards the internationalization of documents, with the goal of making the web truly world wide.

Cascading Style Sheets

Style sheets describe how documents are presented on screens, in print, or perhaps how they are pronounced. By attaching style sheets to structured documents on the web (e.g. HTML), authors and readers can influence the presentation of documents without sacrificing device-independence or adding new HTML tags.

Smarty Template Engine

Smarty is a template engine for PHP. Many other template engines for PHP provide basic variable substitution and dynamic block functionality. Smarty takes a step further to be a "smart" template engine, adding features such as configuration files, template functions, and variable modifiers, and making all of this functionality as easy as possible to use for both programmers and template designers. Smarty also converts the templates into PHP scripts, eliminating the need to parse the templates on every invocation. This makes Smarty extremely scalable and managable for large application needs.

PHP Hypertext Preprocessor

PHP, which stands for "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor" is a widely-used Open Source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML. Its syntax draws upon C, Java, and Perl, and is easy to learn. The main goal of the language is to allow web developers to write dynamically generated webpages quickly, but you can do much more with PHP.

Apache HTTP Server

Apache has been the most popular web server on the Internet since April of 1996. The March 2002 Netcraft Web Server Survey found that 54% of the web sites on the Internet are using Apache, thus making it more widely used than all other web servers combined. The Apache HTTP Server Project is an effort to develop and maintain an open-source HTTP server for various modern desktop and server operating systems, such as UNIX and Windows NT. The goal of this project is to provide a secure, efficient and extensible server which provides HTTP services in sync with the current HTTP standards.

MySQL DBMS

MySQL is the world's most popular Open Source Database, designed for speed, power and precision in mission critical, heavy load use.The MySQL software delivers a very fast, multi-threaded, multi-user, and robust SQL (Structured Query Language) database server.

It goes without saying that all these techniques run on top of the Linux operating system. This site was entirely created in vim an Open Source text editor based on vi. Graphics were designed using The Gimp.
